Who is Avast Secureline? How does it work ?

Avast, with whom you are probably familiar, specializes in the field of computer security, in particular thanks to its various antivirus solutions. It was in the late 1980s that Avast was born in the Czech Republic.

The company is still based in this country today but has diversified its offer well, in order to meet the growing needs of ever more numerous Internet users.Among the additional tools offered by Avast, there is a VPN: Avast Secureline.

So, how does Avast Secureline work exactly? It is actually quite simple, because all VPNs have a similar operation. These act at two levels to ensure your safety when you browse the Internet:

You will understand, VPN protects your data and your digital identity. They even go further by offering you various and varied features.Among these, we can note the bypass of geo-restrictions, censorship, or even the possibility of navigating more anonymously.

We will try to see in this opinion if Avast Secureline keeps its promises in all the areas that we have just mentioned, so that you do not have unpleasant surprises.

Avast Secureline prices

At first, we want to tell you about the Avast Secureline tariff offer. This information is one of the most sought after, and for good reason, it is decisive. The subscriptions available at Avast Secureline are three in number. They are all compatible with Windows (see VPN for Windows here), Android (see the best VPNs for Android here), MacOS and iOS.

In any case, you can benefit from a free trial of Avast Secureline VPN for seven days without entering a credit card, which is a good point. Also, the offers are all covered by a 30 -day reimbursement guarantee.

If these advantages are interesting, we regret, however, that prices are so high.Although they are not exorbitant either, they are enough to qualify our opinion on the price offer of Avast Secureline.

Use Avast Secureline: what to know

So that you know what you should expect using Avast Secureline, we will explain the procedure to start with this software.

Install and take control Avast Secureline

If you want to get started with Avast Secureline, it all starts on the home page of its site. You will find a tab specially dedicated to VPN, from which you can download it.To do this, you just have to choose an offer from those offered (including the free trial) and fill out the payment information requested if necessary.

You can then download the application to the device of your choice. It only takes a few minutes, just like the installation.Once Avast Secureline opened, you must identify yourself thanks to the information provided when subscribing.

From that moment, you can use Avast Secureline without problem.Besides, the interface of this VPN is rather pleasant to use.Indeed, a central button allows you to connect or disconnect the VPN very simply.

Also, you just have to click on the location displayed at the bottom of the window to open the choice of servers and change it with a single click. The general menu, with VPN settings, is accessible at the top right of the interface.

Avis Avast Secureline VPN : test complet de ce logiciel

As you can realize, using Avast Secureline is very easy, even for completely novice people. So this is a good point in our opinion on this VPN.

Emergency stop

To try to complete the service offered, Avast Secureline puts certain options at your disposal.Among these, we find what the VPN calls "emergency stop".In reality, this functionality is that which is commonly called Kill Switch.

This option ensures your protection by suspending your internet traffic in the event of VPN disconnection. In this way, you cannot navigate without being protected by Avast Secureline, which is a positive point if you want our opinion.

Smart VPN

Avast Secureline offers you an interesting second option: this is Smart VPN.This feature is opposed to the so -called manual operation.Indeed, if you activate the Smart VPN, the software chooses alone the moments when it must - or not - activate.

Thus, depending on the level of security or the restrictions of the sites and applications that you visit, Avast Secureline is activated or deactivated, for an optimal experience and safety.

That being said, two important options are missing the call. This is the tunneling split and dedicated IP addresses, which are two possibilities that Avast Secureline does not offer, which is a shame.Consequently, even if the Kill Switch and the Smart VPN are interesting, our opinion on the functionalities of this software is therefore to be qualified.

Avast Secureline and the connection speed

For the rest of this Avast Secureline test, we wanted to know the performance of this software in terms of ascending and descendants flows. This governs all your navigation, it is therefore necessary to know what it really is.

Speed test via a nearly server

In order to realize for ourselves the influence of Avast Secureline on the Internet connection speed, we carried out a test.First of all, we tested our connection without activating the VPN, in order to know the precise characteristics.

Then the same speed test was done, but this time activating Avast Secureline. The latter was connected to its server called “optimal place”, supposed to provide the best possible results. Here is what we got.You will find our initial results on the left, and on the right, the results with the VPN.

As you can see, Avast Secureline has chosen for us a server in Milan, Italy.First of all, we can note that the ping, the loading latency of the pages, went from 17 ms to 33 ms.

This increase is not significant, as is the drop in the upward speed, which goes from 0.7 Mbps to 0.5 Mbps. However, you will notice that the downward speed (the speed at which you will download) has been much harder.

Indeed, the latter went from 7.2 Mbps to 2 Mbps, which is a fairly significant drop and which will necessarily negatively influence the quality of the connection.Due to this fall in the downward speed (despite the fact that we are connected to the server supposed to be the most efficient), our opinion on the speeds offered by Avast Secureline is very negative.

Speed test with a remote server

Since the results obtained during our first speed test with Avast Secureline (and a server close to our location) were really bad, we wanted to renew the experience with a server even further from our location.

To do this, we activated the VPN by connecting to one of its servers in Australia.Once connected, we have relaunched the same speed test.We present the results obtained on the right of the image below, the results on the left being always those of our internet connection without active protection.

It is easy to see that the connection here too has been affected by the activation of the software. The upward speed has hardly changed, going from 0.7 Mbps to 0.6 Mbps. However, the ping climbs this time to 277 ms, which represents a very strong increase. This will necessarily be felt in your browsing on the Internet, as is the drop in downward flow.

The latter has been so reduced as with the Milanese server, falling from 7.2 Mbps to 2 Mbps. You will understand, your Internet connection has been strongly attracted by activation of Avast Secureline. Our already mixed opinion on this subject is therefore confirmed with this second test.

Avast Secureline for streaming

As we quickly mentioned above in this opinion, VPNs can be used to bypass geo-restrictions, which is particularly useful in streaming.Indeed, the majority of streaming platforms, such as Netflix or Disney+, limit your access to content according to your geographical position.

To have access to foreign catalogs, you can therefore use a virtual private network. The goal is to virtually simulate your presence in the desired country. But not to be spotted (and therefore blocked), your VPN must be of good quality. So we will see if this is the case with Avast Secureline.

To do this, we connected to the VPN on its American location, then we opened Netflix and attempted to access programs exclusively reserved for the American public.

Good news: it worked perfectly. We were able to access US programs without worries. However, the streaming experience was quite disappointing due to an excessively long load and a low -quality image.

Also, for catalogs from other countries, such as Japan, Avast Secureline did not work.Rather, we recommend that you opt for one of the best VPNs for Netflix if you want to unlock more catalogs.

Our opinion about streaming with Avast Secureline is therefore to be qualified, even if the VPN manages to unlock some foreign catalogs from Netflix.

Avast Secureline and the download of torrents

Among the other uses that are commonly made of VPNs, we can cite the download of torrents.Maybe you too are looking for a VPN to download. If this is the case, we will see what you can do with Avast Secureline.

And it seems that this virtual private network lends itself to the download game, by taking charge of the P2P traffic. When you know that some block this practice, this represents an advantage in favor of Avast Secureline. However, you should know that all the servers in this VPN do not work with the P2P.

Also, we allow ourselves to remember that the flows observed previously in this test do not go in the direction of fast downloads.Although P2P traffic is covered, it's a safe bet that your downloads with Avast Secureline will be laborious, even impossible to finish, which is necessarily likely to frustrate you.

Therefore, this is a mixed opinion that we make about the download of torrents with Avast Secureline. If you are looking for a good VPN to download torrents, you can orient yourself towards Expressvpn, very competent.

What security at Avast Secureline?

We advance in our opinion on Avast Secureline, but we have not yet approached an essential aspect: the security parameters of this VPN.What are they ?Are they optimal? This is what we will see in the rest of this opinion 2022.

Basic security

As we have explained above in this test, VPNs operate on two levels to ensure your security: they quantify your navigation data and mask your IP address. So, let's see how Avast Secureline proceeds, on one side as on the other.

With regard to the encryption of your navigation information, Avast Secureline uses the AES 256 -bit advanced standard, which is widespread and qualitative.Your data is therefore self -employed, which is a good point in our VPN test.

As for the camouflage of your IP address, it would also seem that Avast Secureline fulfills its mission. To make sure, we carried out an IP address test. Here are the results we were able to get without activating the VPN.

As you can see, our IP address is completely visible. It also betrays our position in a precise manner. In addition, all DNS detected addresses tend to confirm this position. We therefore activated Avast Secureline on its German location, then relaunched the test. Here are the results of this test:

As you can see, our IP address has been changed and it is now locating us in Germany. The DNS detected address confirms this position, which attests to an absence of DNS leaks. You will understand, we have been generally satisfied with the security parameters of Avast Secureline, which is a good point to note in the context of this notice.

Avast Secureline's privacy policy

If the basic parameters linked to security and offered by Avast Secureline are good, what about the processing of your data deemed confidential? This is what we will see in this part dedicated to the privacy policy of this software.

This policy, sometimes neglected, is however crucial because it informs you about the data that your service provider collects or not, and what it can do with it.Unfortunately, we were not convinced by what we discovered in the privacy policy of Avast Secureline.

In the time of VPN 100% No-Log, Avast Secureline seems not to worry about the trend, keeping information on your navigation such as:

Although the safeguarding of this information is not so catastrophic as that of your navigation history for example, we are still disappointed.Indeed, to be totally no-log, your VPN should absolutely keep anything about your use habits, as ExpressVPN or NordVPN do for example.

This is not the case with Avast Secureline, which earned him a negative opinion from us at this level.

Network of countries and servers of Avast Secureline

Among the parameters to be taken into account for the choice of your VPN, there is also the quality of its infrastructure. This includes the number of servers possessed but also their locations and therefore, the countries for which it is possible to obtain a local IP.

At Avast Secureline, it would unfortunately seem that this data is not optimal.Indeed, the software gives no information about the number of servers on which it relies, which does not bode well regarding the strength of its infrastructure.

Also, the number of locations served is just over 50, for a number of countries covered with around thirty. As much to tell you right away, you will have no trouble finding better on the virtual private networks market.

Nous pouvons par exemple vous citer CyberGhost, qui est un VPN de grande qualité et qui possède plus de 6,800 servers. These are distributed in nearly 90 countries, which offers you optimal geographic coverage. You will understand, our opinion about servers and countries of Avast Secureline is average.

Avast Secureline for China

If VPNs are so successful, it is also because they are supposed to bypass the censorship of certain countries. It is most often for China that Internet users are looking for a solution worthy of this name.Indeed, this country practices very strong government censorship.

So, Avast Secureline works in China?Unfortunately, the answer to this question seems to be: rarely.Indeed, on -site user feedback is more than mixed. Some servers seem to work in China (randomly), others not.

This observation is very unfortunate because if you go to China and you cannot count on your VPN, you may find yourself completely blocked.

Among the contents you may not have access, you can cite your local services, but also and above all Google, Facebook or Instagram. In addition, other countries, such as Russia or Turkey practice this censorship.Avast therefore does not really seem up to it in this area, which earned him a new negative opinion from our part.If you plan to go to this country, rather take a VPN that works well in China, like ExpressVPN.

Avast Secureline VPN customer support

There remains a last point to explore in our Avast Secureline test so that it is really complete. We will therefore approach it immediately, and it is the customer support offered. The latter is available through three means:

If these elements seem satisfactory, you must know that user feedback is very bad.Indeed, the telephone line presents very exaggerated response deadlines, as is the ticket service.

Thus, in the event of an urgent problem or dysfunction, your request may not be processed in time.So you may find yourself alone facing the FAQ to try to get out of it.This is very unfortunate, especially from a company the size of Avast, however very famous.

Note that to offer you quality customer service, VPNs such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN, both very qualitative, offer you a live cat service accessible 24/7.

Conclusion: Our opinion 2022 on Avast Secureline

We arrive at the end of our test dedicated to VPN Avast Secureline. As you could see, the latter was not very conclusive.Indeed, although this service has shown a few positive points, such as its ease of use, its security parameters or the fact that it unlocks some catalogs of Netflix, it has also displayed many faults.

Among these negative points, we can cite the flows (ascending and descending) more than disappointing and which considerably impacts the streaming or download experience. Also, the number of servers and countries served by this software seems far too low and it shows large dysfunctions in China.

Finally, its customer support and its privacy policy present certain shortcomings, which is very unfortunate. You can therefore easily understand that we do not issue a positive opinion about it.If you want an alternative worthy of the name to Avast Secureline, we can recommend ExpressVPN, which will not disappoint you.
