Deactivating your Messenger account is a two-step process: you must first deactivate your Facebook account before you can act on Messenger. Two-in-one, this tutorial allows you, by the way, to learn how to deactivate Facebook while keeping Messenger. Indeed, if you do not use or no longer use Facebook, it is better to close your account than to leave it and all the information it contains online.

Deactivate your Facebook account

1. Open your Messenger app and tap your profile picture in the top left of the screen.

2. Scroll to the "Account" pane and select "Account Settings".

3. Then swipe the screen to the "Your Information" section and select the "Account Ownership and Control" pane.

4. Then tap on “Deactivation and deletion”.

5. Now choose the phrase "Continue deactivating and deleting the Facebook account" at the bottom of the page.

6. Then tick the box “Deactivate account”, then confirm by pressing the blue button “Continue deactivating account”.

7. For security reasons, Facebook will then ask you to enter your password. Enter it in the dedicated space, then press "Continue".

8. Then tick a reason to explain your departure among those proposed (or give your own) before "Continue".

9. On this “Account Deactivation” page, Facebook will offer you alternative solutions based on the reason you have just provided in order to encourage you not to deactivate your account. Swipe the screen to the bottom then, in this specific case, press the sliding menu to choose a date for reactivating (or not) your account. By default, the setting is “7 days”.

10. For more freedom, you can choose to "Do not automatically reactivate" your Facebook account.

11. Once you have made your choice, press "Continue".

12. Finally, confirm the operation by touching "Deactivate my account".

Your Facebook account has been deactivated. The next time you go to Messenger, you'll see a message confirming that you can continue to use this messaging service until you permanently delete your Facebook or Messenger account.

Let's continue our tutorial with the second step: deactivating Messenger.

Deactivate your Messenger account

1. Upon opening the Messenger application, you will see a message informing you that you can continue your use of messaging. You just have to press “Continue”.

2. Once you have reached the discussion area, join your personal page to access the settings. To do this, tap on your profile picture.

3. Scroll to the bottom of the page to reach "Legal notices and policies".

4. The line "Deactivate Messenger" which did not appear before the deactivation of the Facebook account is present this time. So you can select it.

5. You may be asked for your password again. Enter it and then tap the “Continue” button.

6. We are getting to the point: all you have to do is press “Disable” one last time.

That's it, your Messenger account is deactivated! You can then reactivate it simply by logging in again. It usually takes about 24 hours for this to work.
