Is your smartphone compatible with Google Assistant?

Google launched Monday, May 29 the deployment of Google Assistant in France and in French. Google France told FrAndroid which smartphones are compatible.

When Google Assistant was launched on Android in March 2017 exclusively in English, Google announced its deployment on “eligible Android 6.0 and 7.0 phones”. He hadn't clarified until now what that meant.

We therefore contacted Google France to find out precisely which smartphones are compatible. We are still waiting for small details, and we will update this article when we receive them, but here are the first elements.

Minimum configuration

So, while it was feared that “Android 6.0 and 7.0 eligible phones” would only refer to a fraction of smartphones running Android 6.0 and 7.0, we now know precisely the prerequisites. It's necessary :

A server-side update

It is not enough to meet the prerequisites to immediately benefit from Google Assistant. And unfortunately, it is also not enough to manually install the very latest versions of Google Play Services or the Google application, through APKmirror for example, to activate the virtual assistant.

The deployment is indeed partly server-side, that is to say that Google is gradually activating Google Assistant on the Google accounts of its millions of French-speaking users. There is no other solution than to be patient. There are many hacks, but at this stage the easiest way is to wait a few days.

A wide variety of compatible smartphones

We can nevertheless specify that many readers have informed us that they have automatically received Google Assistant on all kinds of smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung Galaxy A5 2017, OnePlus 3T, Huawei P10 Lite, Motorola Moto X, Google Nexus 5, etc.
