Dakar American University of Science and Technology (Daust), a Cracks factory

From the various corners and corners of Senegal and Africa, Senegalese and African students presented, yesterday in Somone, a dozen innovative technological projects likely to considerably boost the development of the continent. It was on the occasion of the release of the first promotion of Dakar American University of Science and Technology (Daust). The great absent to this excellence meeting is the very quick state to display its interest in the development of STEM.

It's a school like no other.Far from the literature of the figures that we are used to seeing in many schools and universities of Senegal, here, the mastery of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is a concrete reality. At the Dakar American University of Science and Technology (Daust), from the first year, residents are starting to seek and find solutions that come out of the ordinary.Artificial intelligence, valuation of plastic waste, fight against maternal and child mortality, robotics, several areas are explored, from the first to the fifth year, by science and technology enthusiasts.

Yesterday, on the occasion of the release of the first promotion, the students presented 15 technological projects, some more innovative than the others.Student in the first year, Senegalese having spent most of his course in Guinea, Mame Moussa Sène does not regret her choice suggested by parents. He testifies: ‘’ It’s really a big opportunity to be there. As you can see with this exhibition, we are not always on our notebooks, we are not always there to make theory; We associate the practice with theory and it is really an advantage. This is all the difference between Daust modeled on the American model and most of our schools and universities.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

Passionate about technology, the new resident of Daust managed, in just a few months, to set up an artificial intelligence system to replace man with the machine in the field of games. For a start, he chose the titris. He explains the principle: ‘’ Artificial intelligence is a simulation of human intelligence. We wonder about the human brain, we try to see how it works, and we try to reproduce the same thing with the machine, through codes.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

The least we can say is that the machine clearly takes over the one who made it.‘’ To give you an idea, this score on the table illustrates our respective performance.I played for 5 minutes for a score of 11. Before clarifying: ‘’ In fact, this is just one example among so many others. We can adapt artificial intelligence to several types of game. For example, for FIFA, you sometimes hear someone saying that he plays against the computer. In fact, he plays against artificial intelligence.’’ At least until then.

Student at the LCB high school in Dakar, Amadou Tidiane who came to visit the exhibition does not hide her enthusiasm.‘’ As I am a great player, it’s one of the projects that marked me the most.It is a project that allows you to put the computer in the place of man.We have noticed that the computer never loses. We must therefore be able to train with and it can be useful to us in competitions like the ladies' game.Since the machine does not lose, it will be a question of adopting the same reflexes to have better results.

Intelligent padlock to fight insecurity

Dakar American University of Science and Technology (Daust), une fabrique à Cracks

Student in 5th year, member of the outgoing promotion, Mouhamadou s.Diop is very happy to be the first cohort of students who have had to frequent the school.Very enthusiastic, the Sicap resident presented his project, the first prototype of which is already available. This is a very innovative and practical solution to fight insecurity. He explains: '' It is a project to develop a smart padlock, that is to say an intelligent padlock that gives information in real time on the position, the state of the padlock… it is to fight against'insecure.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

With the Mouhamadou solution and its team, it is certainly fewer flights that end up.In fact, it is a padlock with an alarm, GPS and SMSing system to allow the holder not only to follow his goods, if he is conveyed for example on a container, to reactQuick if someone tries to smash it.The mechanical engineer specifies: ‘’ There are two ways to receive SMS.The first is the owner himself who requests the information. He receives it wherever the luggage can be found. The second is when, for example, we try to touch the padlock to fly. There, sending the SMS is automatic. Also, the alarm system is triggered ... Also, there is a GPS that allows you to locate it.Which allows us to follow our luggage on the go.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

To develop such a project, Mouhamadou and his friends were able to count on the partner company led by Ms. Diagne Oumy Ndiaye.According to the latter, this is a very useful partnership between the school and the business world.‘’ This prototype, she underlines, we had acquired it and we gave it to Daust, because we wanted to trop it.Daust reworked the product from nothing, creating the integrated circuits and adding other temperature, alarm sensors ... it is a big challenge and if everything is going well, it will be a question of making iton a large scale and to market it.We are really happy with the work that is being killed.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

The objective, she insists, is to set up a platform which will make it possible to disseminate the product through pharmacies, vehicles which transport goods, stores and other supermarkets in particular.‘’ Particularity is that it will be a locally mastered technology.Maintenance can therefore be done on site. And it will be possible to produce as much as we want, because we master the production costs ’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’.

Returning to potential customers, it does not forget public organizations specializing in security. ‘’Nous visons également tous les organismes : que ça soit l’armée, la police, la gendarmerie, la douane qui ont besoin de sécuriser des entrepôts, des véhicules transportant des marchandises ou produits dangereux… Plus besoin de mettre des gardiens, puisque le produit va permettre de sécuriser totalement les lieux et la porte d’entrée’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’, s’enflamme le bailleur.

Yaay Ak Doom to reduce maternal and child mortality

Like the above -mentioned projects, others were exposed by the students. In total, it is not less than 15 projects carried out by very euphoric students and students.Next to Seynabou Faye, a 4th year student, is placed a nice mirror with a touch screen bordered by wood. She affectionately calls him ‘’ Yaay ak doom ’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’.She presents: ‘’ We realized that in Senegal, the maternal and infantile mortality rate is very high.We were in Kédougou to see what are the problems that women face.We have seen that there were infections, hemorrhages, the deficit of doctors ... We tried to see how to remedy these problems.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’

Thus was born ‘’ yaay ak doom ’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’.A mirror equipped with sensors that track down the weight of the woman during the nine months of pregnancy, to see if the level of oxygen in the blood, the number of heartbeat is normal ... '' We wanted to create an applicationwhich makes it possible to join a doctor easily, whatever our geographical position, as well as all the solutions to make life easier for pregnant women in the rural world, in order to reduce maternal mortality.

A robot to help Senelec clean its solar panels

For his part, Djamilla, a 5th year student, presented with her team a project that they are developing in collaboration with the Senelec.‘’ We work on this project whose goal is to make a robot that can automatically clean the solar panels. We know that dust on the panels prevents solar energy from reaching photovoltaic cells. This impacts the performance of the panels. Some use hand washing, others the tractor. This is the case of the Senelec. The problem is the massive use of water and the cost of fuel. Du coup, notre système est plus pratique, moins polluant, moins coûteux’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’, soutient la résidente de Keur Massar qui a eu à bénéficier d’une bourse offerte par M.NDAO, President of the School.

A machine to replace the carpenter

In addition, one of the projects that has marked a lot of visitors, it is the smart machine that allows you to replace the carpenter in most of the tasks he accomplishes so far with the hand. ‘’Comme le nom l’indique, informe Serigne Mbacké Ka, étudiant en 3e année, c’est l’artisanat digital. We wanted to digitize, mechanize and automate the work of craftsmen: wooden carpenters, metallic, jeweler ...

As you can see, we have a digital cutting machine model here. This allows the craftsman, in the carpenter in this case, to only do the drawing of his product, to place it in the application and it will be responsible for making the whole product with very high precision. With such a machine, our carpenters can for example, in one day, make a bed, a double-bed, a wardrobe ... and what makes our machine unique is that we want to allow remote control of our machine.Someone could, for example, be in France, in the United States and control the machine.’’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’ ’
