Images of the Apollo 16 mission available in 4K thanks to artificial intelligence

A YouTuber specializing in photo and film restoration has improved the quality of images from the 1972 Apollo 16 lunar mission. Thanks to his work, everyone can now enjoy video in 4K quality at 60 frames per second, explains Futura Science.

“I really wanted to offer a unique experience with these old images. I searched for the highest quality source videos first, which I luckily found as high bitrate 720p video files. The quality issue was already resolved,” the man who runs the DutchSteamMachine YouTube channel told Universe Today.

Original jerky sequences

Next, we had to solve the problem of the frame rate. Originally, Apollo 16 lunar mission astronauts Charlie Duke and John Young recorded movies at a maximum of 12 frames per second. “Most of the sequences shot were still very jerky,” explains the specialist.

Faced with this problem, he used software based on artificial intelligence which inserts false images recreated from scratch between the real images. Then all he had to do was apply color correction and synchronize the images with the sound. And the result is stunning! The youtuber did not stop there. He also posted videos of the Apollo 15 mission.
