The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel: Santa Monica police intervene after Amazon Prime Video promotion

To promote its series, the platform reduced the prices of many businesses around Los Angeles. A service station, victim of its success, was closed for a few hours by the police.

The campaign was well thought out: to promote its series La Fabuleuse Mrs. Maisel, Amazon Prime Video implemented monster discounts at several businesses around Los Angeles on Thursday. In particular in a service station in Santa Monica, which the police had to close for a few hours because of the influx of drivers.

The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel follows a tidy middle-class New York mother who discovers a talent for stand-up comedy. The plot is set in the 1950s; the price of refueling at the service station has therefore returned to that of 60 years ago, or 30 cents per gallon (about 3.8 litres).

Several hours of traffic jams

As ABC reports, the gas station suffered a hit: the long line of vehicles stretched across the road, causing traffic jams. According to the Los Angeles Times, the roads were blocked for several hours. The promotion was scheduled to run until 5 p.m.; Santa Monica police closed the station at 2 p.m.

Other businesses, such as restaurants, hotels or beauty salons have offered these reductions for a day, called "Maisel Day". The event was thought up by Amazon to campaign for the 2019 Emmy Awards. The fabulous Mrs. Maisel has been nominated 20 times. Voting started on Thursday.
