With the metaverse, Facebook will collect our data "at a much higher level"

Le Aurélie Jean, specialist in artificial intelligence, warns against the new virtual project of the social network, calling for a regulation of the practices of development of algorithms.

This is Mark Zuckerberg's big project. Last week, the Facebook founder presented his metaverse project, symbolically renaming the social network's parent company with a new name: Meta.

The idea is to accelerate on the virtual world, which will exist in parallel with the real world. "I find the metaverse brilliant" explains on BFM Business Aurélie Jean, one of the most influential specialists in the world in artificial intelligence. "It's not completely new" she recalls since it is used "in video games, in the field of health to manage certain pains, in the field of training in flight simulators."

But the doctor of science, who publishes Do algorithms rule the roost? (L'Observatoire, 20 euros) nevertheless warns about the Meta project.

Regulating practices

According to her, we must therefore review the regulation. "We have come to the end of a road. We must regulate the practices of development, design, testing of algorithms" slice Aurélie Jean, conceding that this "will deeply question the economic model of these platforms".

It would also be an opportunity to avoid the "bubble effect" of social networks. "On social networks, you can very easily be put in observation and opinion bubbles" given the way the algorithm is used, she says. “The solution is to develop your algorithms correctly and test them to avoid having the bubble effect,” she insists.
