The Hadopi law has allowed American films to increase their receipts by 121 million eurosTo the detriment of French films, reveals a study

In 2009, the French authorities adopted the Hadopi law in order to fight against the piracy of cultural works. In principle, the application of the various chapters and sections of this law should lead Internet users to use legal means to obtain cultural works. If we subscribe to this logic, this law should increase the receipts linked to these cultural works. However, the consequences of this law on French cinema are not as logical as expected. Indeed, Christophe Bellégo (normalien, administrator of Insee) and Romain de Nijs (graduate and researcher at the École polytechnique) conducted a study to assess the effects of the Hadopi law on film receipts in theaters of cinema. After using four strategies at different levels of observation, the professionals came to the conclusion that "the Hadopi law is associated with an increase in the market share of American films of 9%, but without an increase in demand". total for films in theatres”. Put simply, this law had the effect on individuals of leading them to watch more American films in theaters rather than leading them to watch French films. In addition, this study reveals that the attendance rate of cinemas has not increased. To reach these conclusions, the authors of the report first conducted studies at the level of cities in France to see the effects of the Hadopi law on the piracy of American films. Secondly, they conducted a comparative study between the sales of American films and those of French films in order to establish a link between these sales and the Hadopi law throughout France. Third, they compared the sales results of American films across different European countries. And finally, they analyzed the sales of films for different groups of consumers. This whole process revealed that since the adoption of the Hadopi law, young people have turned more to cinemas to watch American films by compared to other age categories. The fundamental reason is that when the law came into force, young people abandoned illegal means of downloading films and turned to cinemas. Also, if in the past they could watch French films in theaters, young people will make selections by favoring American films to the detriment of French films because of their pronounced taste for the former and their limited means. This attitude represents in France a 10% growth for American films viewed in theaters by consumers. In terms of cinema admissions, this represents an increase of 19.2 million, which gives an increase of 121 million euros for American films watched in theaters to the detriment of French films. of this month, the senate suggested the abolition of HADOPI considering that it "has not provided proof of its effectiveness". With this new information, which serves French interests, the position of the Senate for the abolition of this body will be further strengthened.Download the full report of the studySource: BFMTVAnd you? What do you think of the results of this study? What do you think can be done to avoid such consequences?See alsoForum Political News
