Destroy the virus with the heat of heating | The Press

The disinfection of emergency vehicles has invariably been a daily challenge since the start of the pandemic. How can we stop the COVID-19 virus effectively while harming essential services as little as possible?

To this question, Ford offers an unusual answer that could undoubtedly help North American police services. Together with the Ohio State University, the American manufacturer has developed software to increase the temperature of the passenger compartment for 15 minutes to 56 degrees Celsius.

Why 56 degrees?

At this temperature, the virus would be eliminated from more than 99% of all surfaces, according to the university researchers who worked on the project. To activate this feature, keys must be pressed in a precise sequence, which avoids the possibility of a handling error. Ford nevertheless specifies that this does not replace the disinfection of vehicles with cleaning products, but makes it possible to prevent the virus from surviving on surfaces which could not or cannot be disinfected on a daily basis.

For the moment, this software can be implemented in all Ford Explorer Police Interceptors from model years 2013 to 2019.
